Welcome to my electronic business card. My name is Marc and on this site you'll get a brief glimpse into my perspective and my passions.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions or comments.
Professional
In both developed and developing nations I have seen that technology and software can be powerful tools when designed properly and used judiciously.
These are principles that are increasingly important as technology becomes omnipresent in many people's lives.
Professional > Software Development
I have written software to help research ecosystem remediation, to wirelessly gather data from remote vehicles, and also had the privilege to work on embedded devices that help increase the safety of taxi drivers around the world.
My formal education led to a bachelor's degree in software engineering and a master's degree in bioresource engineering working on ecosystem models. Through my studies and experiences I have worked with many programming languages and frameworks, including C, C++, C#, WPF, Java, FORTRAN, and Matlab among others.
Professional > Web Development
I enjoy working on websites that have a high usability. That means that by being informative, esthetically pleasing and visually organized, the message is properly conveyed to the intended audience. I develop complete web sites, creating a front end user experience as well as the back end applications.
Other Passions
Although I love what I do by in my professional career, I find balance by maintaining my other passions: photography, exploring, and staying active.
Other Passions > Exploration/Travel
The world around me has always drawn my attention. That includes the natural environment, foreign countries and my backyard.
I try to capture some of these moments on our blog
Other Passions > Ultimate Frisbee
The combination of athletism and comraderie drew me into spending much of my free time playing and training for Ultimate Frisbee (check out this link if this sport is completely new to you). Besides keeping me fit, playing Ultimate has helped me feel at home after relocations and has also been a great outlet for friendly competition.
Advocacy
I believe that every single person and community as a whole deserve the right to Health, Education, and Respect. These are some organizations that I am involved with that support these values.
Advocacy > Community Education Fund
When parents have trouble finding good employment it is difficult for their children to continue in school. In turn the children will find themselves in the same position as their parents, unable to find good employment, unable to properly support their own families.
This cycle can be broken by helping children get a proper education, even under difficult family situations. The mission of the St Gabriel's Community Education Fund is to help individuals in Malawi complete studies to be better equipped to provide for themselves and their families.

Advocacy > Medic Mobile
The mission of Medic Mobile is to advance healthcare networks in under served communities using innovative, appropriate mobile technologies. I have seen the benefits of such a system first hand in Namitete, Malawi where a single nurse can care for over 600 patients in remote areas by efficiently communicating with Community Health Workers.
Advocacy > Other Causes
These are some other great organization that I like to support whenever I can:
- Hope Phones
Donate your old phones to a medical clinic in a developing country. Every cell phone given to community health workers connects distant patients to a medical clinic. - Give A Day
Challenges each person to recognize World AIDS Day on December 1st by giving one day's salary to an organization that will use the money well in the fight against HIV - Stephen Lewis Foundation
Supports grassroots community-based organizations working to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa - Dignitas International
Increases access to effective HIV/AIDS-related prevention, treatment, care and support
